I was preparing for part of a presentation to the staff at my school tomorrow, highlighting the importance of numeracy being included in all subject areas.
Looking for pictures of people using measurement in daily life, I saw someone measuring up for a Christmas tree to fit in their living room, and was reminded of this scene from the Chevy Chase movie, “Christmas Vacation”:
A nice little discussion starter for thinking about how numeracy might have avoided the problems we see in the clip. You could also chat about the possible skills that would be helpful (measurement, space).
