Rounding Starter

Friday, 30 April 2010

Here’s a quick starter activity for rounding.

Show this slide (or write the numbers on the board).

Slide with the numbers 12300, 0.7, 17.1345, 400, 1.32, 0.80, 9.9, 8.752, 25000

Ten questions to ask… for these questions, the answers are “possible answers” (discussion point):

  1. Which number has been rounded to the nearest hundred? (12300, 400, 25000)
  2. Which number has been rounded to 1 decimal place? (0.7, 9.9)
  3. Which number has been rounded to the nearest thousand? (25000)
  4. Which number has been rounded to 2 decimal places? (1.32, 0.80)
  5. If counting by hundreds, the number after the green number would be. (12400)
  6. Which number has 4 decimal places? (17.1345)
  7. In the blue number, which digit is in the tenths place value? (7)
  8. Round the pink number to the nearest hundredth. (17.13)
  9. Which number rounded to the nearest unit would equal 10? (9.9)
  10. Which numbers rounded to the nearest unit would equal 1? (1.32, 0.80, 0.7)

The PowerPoint file includes the slide and the questions in the notes section.
